Types of Bladder after Spinal Cord Injury

by admin on September 9, 2011

Not much to say, there are two kinds of bladder which are seen after spinal cord injury, 1. Spastic bladder, 2. Flaccid Bladder

Spastic bladder as its name suggests derived from spasms, it is highly spastic, so person do not have control on his bladder, bladder empties on its own, frequency of urination is increased, patient has severe urge to urinate even before bladder is full.Spastic bladder is seen when injury is above T12 segment. On the other side lies the Flaccid bladder also called as neurogenic bladder, where bladder will not empty, urine will keep on accumulating in bladder, putting high pressure on bladder wall, ultimately damaging kidney causing hydronephrosis etc.

Management is simple putting intermittent catheterization, indwelling catheterization and condom cathether, you can watch out a classic video of types of bladder below on youtube by youtube user brainandspinalcord

I can only pray that I never have to experience this type of injury. Adapting to new challenges is a huge challenge on its own…
